Mornington Peninsula
The boot-shaped promontory of land that curves south of Melbourne
to form the eastern shore of Port Phillip Bay is Victoria's oldest
and most popular holiday playground, but is now enjoying renewed
fame as a major holiday destination only one hour from Melbourne.
Surrounded on three sides by the waters of Port Phillip and Western
Port Bays, and Bass Strait, it provides the closest ocean beaches
to Melbourne and a stunning crescent of safe bayside beaches.
Between the bays, its rich hinterland boasts fine scenic views of
grazing pastures, thoroughbred horse studs, fruit orchards and rolling,
vine-clad hills. This is Australia's newest and fastest growing
boutique wine district, featuring over 100 vineyards and 35 cellar
door facilities, many of which include restaurants with breathtaking
views over sea and countryside. When combined with its reputation
for fine food and character accommodation, the Mornington Peninsula
is attracting an ever-growing reputation for 'the good life'.
The Mornington Peninsula is set to become Australia's home of golf,
with a spate of new golf courses including the Moonah Links which
will not only house the Australian Golf Union headquarters and Australian
Golf Museum, but also the Australian Open every three years from
2003. The ambitious project will create for Australian golf an official
headquarters, similar to the Royal and Ancient at St. Andrews.
11.00am Arrive the Dunes for 18 holes
of Golf
Another of Victoria's true links courses, it boasts 27 holes cut
in the sand dunes and boasts some very picturesque scenery and plenty
of challenging golf.
The Dunes was acquired by the present owner in January 1994. A
full redesign was then undertaken by architect Antony Cashmore.
The course was extended to 27 holes, incorporating a tournament
standard 18 holes and a 9 hole social course. The course is unique
to Victoria and probably Australia. It is set in gentle sand dunes
adjacent Bass Strait and is generally regarded as Australia's closest
example of the classic links of Ireland and Scotland. There is not
a weak or uninteresting hole. In 1998 the development phase was
finalised with the completion of a new 3 storey clubhouse.
